A LEI
"A lei is not simply a strand of flowers sewn on a string, it is a garland of the many strands
of love which grow over time, woven together into a symbol of affection and care for the recipient.
Things strung on a string are a necklace, a gift woven of love is a lei". -Leilehua Yuen
How To Make A Lei
Hawaiian lei makers use a special lei needle, if you don't have one simply use a large needle such as a darning needle.
- Measure the length of the lei you would like...
- Take the measurement around your neck down to the finished length... for example the center of your chest (about a metre).
- Cut a piece of dental floss or soft string to this length - you want enough leftover to tie the ends together when you are finished stringing the flowers.
- Carefully string the flowers together by going through the centers of the flowers, down the string.
- When you have enough flowers on your string simply tie off.

Head Dress Lei
Use ferns, leaves and flowers to make a colourful head piece to wear on your head, wrist, or around a hat.
- Measure string or fabric as a base - enough to wrap around your head.
- Have a selection of leaves, flowers, seeds, feathers, ferns- whatever you wish to include in your lei ready.
- Wrap the leaves etc onto your base and secure with string.
