Frequently Asked Questions on Stones for Hot Stone Massage
Q.
Is there a specific stone used for Hot Stone Massage?
A.
Hot Stone Massage professionals tend to use Basalt stones. Basalt tends to hold the heat the best. However, other stone varieties can hold heat as well and are suitable for massage.
Q.
Is it possible to find your own stones?
A.
Yes there are many areas where you can find basalt stones. We found our beautiful Heart Stone in our own garden.
However: You must never remove stones from National Parks or Crown Land areas. Check with your local council or land department for guidelines.
Q.
Is it true that stones can explode?
A.
Yes.
Basalt stones are formed by lava cooling very quickly. Sometimes a small bubble of air may be trapped within the stone.
This small bubble of air can expand as the stone heats - the expansion can cause the stone to shatter explosively.
No matter where the stone may have come from. All Volcanic stones may be subject to this effect.
If you heat the stones in a microwave oven or in a fire the stone can explode dramatically and cause serious damage.
Q.
